5 Myths About Medical Cannabis You Should Know

Updated: Jun 28, 2021

1) All Medical Cannabis will get you "high"

While it is true that Medical Cannabis can get you high, this is not the case for every specific strain of Medical Cannabis grown. Some strains are grown for their Cannabidiol (CBD) profile, and though CBD is considered psychoactive, it tends to be less of a mental feeling and more of a body-specific relaxation, though there does tend to be mental ease associated with the consumption of CBD. Strains cultivated for higher Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content will be more likely to give a high but are also different depending on each strain. Some THC strains might offer more of an energized and mentally focused effect, whereas others can cause drowsiness and heavy relaxation.

It is important to keep in mind that, while Medical Cannabis is recommended to you like any other medication, it should also be consumed as recommended. While it is true that not every form of Medical Cannabis can get you high, the strains and methods that do can be overpowering when consumed in excess.

Your Cannabis will be recommended to you based on your qualifying conditions, and here at Cannabis Doctors of Flordia, we make sure that you are getting the right medication for your needs. As such, our staff is always ready to show you why we're Florida's #1 Medical Marijuana Doctor.

2) Medical Cards are 'Get out of Jail Free' Cards

Your Medical Card is not a get-out-of-jail-free card. Keep in mind that, federally speaking, Cannabis is illegal. And, though Cannabis is legal medically here in Florida, there are still some rules we have to follow. For example, patients with a doctor’s recommendation for cannabis may be able to buy up to 2.5 ounces within a 35-day period, but the rules of possession are slightly different. If you have a recommendation for smokable marijuana, you’re allowed to possess as much as four ounces of cannabis flower at any time. Anything more and you could be facing some criminal charges, and you could also get your card revoked.

On the subject of limitations, smoking Cannabis in public is illegal. Even if you are a patient of Medical Cannabis; and you have your Medical Card on you, it is still illegal. Consumption is restricted to your property and nowhere else. To risk public consumption is risking your Medical Card and potential legal problems.

3) Medical Cannabis Patients are Accepted in Every State

Patients of Medical Cannabis from other states should be forewarned that their Medical Cards WILL NOT be accepted in Florida. Currently, only these states are accepting out-of-state Medical Cannabis cards:

  • Arizona

  • Arkansas

  • Hawaii

  • Maine

  • Michigan

  • Nevada

  • New Hampshire

  • New Mexico

  • Oklahoma

  • Puerto Rico

  • Rhode Island

  • Washington, DC

No other states will accept your Medical Card, including here in Florida.

An important note to keep in mind, traveling across states with Cannabis, even if it is Medically recommended and you have your Medical Card with you, is a Federal crime. Do not attempt it. You are risking your freedom and your Medical Card. For tips on traveling with your Medical Cannabis, see this video from labroots.com:

4) Insurance Covers All Medical Prescriptions

American health insurance, at this time, does not cover your Medical Cannabis recommendations. While Medical Cannabis is a medicine in the state of Florida and other states in the country, it is not Federally accepted. Therefore, insurance cannot legally cover the costs of Medical Cannabis. This means that you are expected to pay full price for your recommendations and evaluations. We at Cannabis Doctors of Florida know that you want your experience to be simple and affordable, so we try our best to offer just that. Our evaluation rates are competitive and, with our referral program, you can make your experience that much cheaper when you refer 3 people- you get $25 off.

5) Medical Cannabis is A Gateway Drug

No. Medical Cannabis is not a gateway drug. While, yes, it is true that Cannabis, like any other substance, can be abused. It is also true that many more patients who use Medical Cannabis do not become addicted. If used as recommended, then Medical Cannabis is no more addicting than opiates that are given through pharmaceuticals. Case studies have shown that there is room for dependency to grow in certain individuals, but research also shows that combating addiction to Cannabis is much safer than almost any other substance.

If you are a patient of Medical Cannabis, then please use your Cannabis as recommended. Abusing Cannabis is as dangerous as abusing other forms of medication, respecting your dosage ensures that you are being treated effectively and within your body's tolerance.
